PTK is not a refractive procedure. It may be used to treat various corneal conditions such as recurrent corneal erosions. During PTK, the epithelium is gently removed from the cornea, laser is used in the treatment and a contact lens is then placed over the cornea for the following days as the epithelium regenerates.
Crosslinking is a procedure used to strengthen collagen bonds within the cornea. It is performed to slow down or even stop the progression of cornea ectasia of refractive laser. This procedure does not correct refractive error. The epithelium is gently removed from the cornea. The cornea is then soaked with riboflavin (Vitamin B2) followed by exposure of ultraviolet light which strengthens bonds between the collagen molecules. A contact lens is then placed over the cornea for the following days as the epithelium regenerates.
CAIRS involve donor-derived cornea tissues placed into customised channels within your cornea to reshape and stabilize it, primarily for treating corneal ectasias like keratoconus. Unlike synthetic intrastromal ring segments, CAIRS uses natural corneal tissue, offering better biocompatibility and a reduced risk of complications like extrusion or inflammation. Clinical studies have shown that CAIRS significantly improves uncorrected and corrected vision, flattens corneal curvature, and has a favorable safety profile with minimal complications.
