PhotoRefractive Keratectomy (PRK)
PRK is an elective refractive procedure, meaning there is no medical emergency that requires it to be performed. It is used to correct short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
In PRK, no corneal flap is created. Instead, the thin outer layer of the cornea is gently removed to expose the underlying tissue. The excimer laser is then used to reshape the corneal surface. After the procedure, a soft contact lens is placed over the eye to protect it while the outer layer of the eye regenerates naturally over several days.
Laser In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK)
LASIK is an elective refractive procedure, meaning there is no medical emergency that requires it to be performed. It is one of several options available to correct short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
During LASIK, a thin flap is created on the surface of the cornea using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser (such as IntraLase). This flap is gently lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue. An excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea to correct the refractive error. Finally, the flap is repositioned, where it naturally adheres without the need for sutures.
ELITA SILK (Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis)
Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis (SILK) is an elective refractive surgery that corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Rather than creating a corneal flap, this bladeless, flapless procedure uses the ELITA femtosecond laser to form a precise biconvex lenticule within the cornea, which is then removed through a small 2–3 mm incision.
This reshapes the corneal curvature to correct vision. This minimally invasive approach is particularly well suited for patients with active lifestyles—such as contact sports athletes or those with physically demanding professions—who benefit from a flapless procedure and quick visual recovery.
