Frequently asked questions

Screening/ Arrival for procedures

How do I know if I am eligible for refractive laser vision correction?
Book a free Vision Screening with MELG!
Depending on the type of procedure done, therapeutic procedures may have a Medicare rebate. Refractive laser vision correction is an elective procedure, there is no Medicare rebate, However, some private health insurance extras policies may offer partial rebates—especially with higher-tier plans—after applicable waiting periods. Speak to your Private Health Insurance company for further details. MELG is not a hospital facility, and do not charge patients directly for procedural suite fees—everything is included in your treatment plan that is quoted by your doctor.

Procedure

Does it hurt?

You will be awake during the procedure but the eye is completely numbed by local anesthetic eye drops so that you do not feel any discomfort. MELG staff will also administer oral painkillers for you before the procedure.

During the procedure a small spring clip [called a speculum] is in place to prevent blinking and an anaesthetic drop will ensure the eyes are comfortable. During the laser treatment an eye tracker follows every movement of your eye, ensuring that each laser pulse is aimed at exactly the correct position on your eye.
Yes, you will need to have someone to accompany you home after surgery.

Recovery

Do I need to take time off work?
It is advisable that you spend the days following surgery resting. While the procedure itself is quick, it is still considered a surgical procedure and as such proper rest and post-op care should be taken in the early recovery stages.
